Description

Hand-carved from dark green serpentine, this djed pillar amulet has a slender tapering form with a tall broad shaft and capital incised with four short horizontal bars.  The amulet is pierced at the back for attachment and is strung as a necklace on a tarnish-resistant sterling silver chain.

The djed-pillar was closely linked with Osiris, and its shape was interpreted as a representation of his backbone, suggesting stability and endurance.  Conferring these qualities on the deceased, they were usually found in numbers on a mummy and almost invariably strung out across the lower torso.

Dimensions: Amulet: 5/8 inch (1.5 cm), Chain length: 18 inches (45.7 cm)

Condition: Showing signs of ancient wear that does not detract, the amulet is intact and in good condition overall.  Restrung as a necklace on a modern, tarnish resistant sterling silver chain.

Provenance:   Private Dutch collection, acquired in 1970 from an art gallery in Rotterdam.
